  • 1983 murder of two gardaí in Ballinamore under investigation Murder · Co. Leitrim

On 16 December 1983, Garda Gary Sheehan, 23, and Private Patrick Kelly, 35, were shot dead by a Provisional IRA gang at Drumcornan Wood, Ballinamore, Co Leitrim, during a joint Garda and Defence Forces search for kidnapped businessman Don Tidey. Tidey, a supermarket executive, had been taken from his home in Rathfarnham, Dublin, on 24 November 1983 by IRA members posing as gardaí and held for 23 days before the rescue operation. No one was ever convicted for the killings, and a Garda review into the incident is ongoing. A memorial ceremony and monument unveiling for the two men took place in Ballinamore on 16 December 2024, and the 42nd anniversary was marked in December 2025.
