In January 2021, a black pony was seized with severely overgrown hooves from a field near Cloughjourdan, Co Tipperary, after a member of the public contacted the ISPCA. ISPCA Animal Inspector Emma Carroll identified Eugene Cleary, a man from Derrinclare, Shinrone, Co Offaly, as the owner, who initially denied seeing the pony before admitting ownership the following day. Cleary pleaded guilty to animal cruelty at Nenagh District Court on 10 February 2022. He was fined €1,000 and ordered to pay €750 in costs. The pony, named Nash by rescuers, was taken to the ISPCA National Animal Centre in Longford where it received regular farrier treatment and made an excellent recovery.
