On 29 September 2022, a joint operation by the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau, Revenue Customs Service, and Cork Divisional Drugs Unit seized 35kg of herbal cannabis with an estimated value of €700,000 at a storage unit on Bandon Road, Cork city. A 49-year-old man, later identified as Eugene Barrett, was arrested at the scene and detained at Togher Garda Station under drug trafficking legislation. Barrett, who had no previous convictions, pleaded guilty to possessing the drugs for sale or supply under Section 15A of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977. In June 2023, Cork Circuit Criminal Court sentenced him to five years' imprisonment, with the judge noting exceptional circumstances allowed a departure from the mandatory 10-year term.
