  Ernest Dunican, 38, pleaded guilty to assaulting Michelle Galvin at her residence in St Cormac's Park, Kilcormac, Laois, on 21 February 2019, striking her with a knuckleduster and splitting her head open. He also pleaded guilty to possessing a knife at the same address on 8 March 2019. The guilty plea was entered only after a jury had been selected for a trial. On 6 December 2022, Judge Keenan Johnson at Tullamore Circuit Court sentenced Dunican to four years and three months for the assault, with the last six months suspended for seven years, and a concurrent two-year sentence for the knife offence.
