  Eoin Middleton, 22, of Birr, Offaly, was acquitted of assaulting James Doran, 36, also of Birr, after a trial at Tullamore Circuit Court. The alleged assault took place at Eden Road, Birr, on 3 May 2024, when Middleton struck Doran with the wooden handle of a sweeping brush, causing a fractured cheekbone and an indentation fracture to the skull. Middleton pleaded not guilty and his legal team argued self defence, while the prosecution said the force used was grossly excessive. A jury before Judge Ronan Munro returned a not guilty verdict on 28 April 2026.
