latest first- Garda's jail term for puddle water assault on teen replaced with community service on appeal Assault · Co. Dublin
On 9 January 2023 on Granby Place in Dublin 1, near the Rotunda Hospital, Garda Eoghan McGowan (29) twice poured puddle water over the tracksuit bottoms of a 17-year-old boy who was in State care. McGowan pleaded guilty to assault, and in April 2025 Judge Michele Finan at Dublin District Court imposed a four-month jail sentence, which he immediately appealed. Two other gardaí were also charged over the incident, and later reports say those charges were dismissed. On appeal in December 2025, his jail term was replaced with 60 hours of community service and he was ordered to pay a further €5,000 to the victim, the latest development.
