  • Garda superintendent spared record for public order offence in Dublin Public order (threatening · Co. Dublin

Garda Superintendent Gavin O'Reilly, 41, an Irish man from Cavan, was off duty at Pennylane bar on Strand Street Great, Dublin, on 26 August 2023 when he and two friends were asked to leave and a confrontation followed with bar manager Emma Parks and Brazilian bouncer Marcos Peter Inacio. The case was investigated by the Garda Ombudsman (GSOC) for 14 months, and O'Reilly was suspended by Commissioner Drew Harris on Christmas Eve 2024. At a three-day non-jury trial at Dublin District Court in September 2025, Judge John Hughes acquitted O'Reilly of assault and racial abuse but convicted him of a Section 6 Public Order Act offence in limited circumstances. On 8 October 2025, O'Reilly was ordered to donate €1,000 to a charity building schools in Gambia, after which the charge was struck out and he avoided a criminal record.

  • Garda superintendent on trial for assault in Dublin Assault · Co. Dublin

On the night of 26 August 2023, Gavin O'Reilly, an off-duty Garda superintendent, allegedly assaulted Emma Parks, the manager of the Pennylane bar, at Strand Street Great in Dublin city centre. Parks told the court that O'Reilly returned to the bar after being asked to leave, told her she was never going to work again, hit her phone out of her hand, and a security guard alleged he directed a racial slur at him. O'Reilly faces two charges of assault and threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour. His non-jury trial opened before Judge John Hughes at Dublin District Court on 9 September 2025, and he denies both charges. The defence application to dismiss the charges was rejected and the trial continues.
