  • Man sentenced to nine years for rape of wife in Cork Rape · Co. Cork

    On 19 August 2020, Riad Hamzi, a 51-year-old Algerian man, punched his then-wife Elena O'Brien twice in the body, raped her, and put his fist in her mouth at their home in Cork after she raised concerns about their marriage and a wish to separate. Hamzi denied the rape, telling gardaí it was consensual sex. A jury at the Central Criminal Court convicted him of a single count of rape in December 2024. In March 2025, Mr Justice Paul Burns sentenced him to nine years, with the final year suspended for three years on strict conditions, backdated to 20 December 2024.
