  • Teacher sentenced for maternity fraud at Tullamore Circuit Court Fraud

Eimear Carroll, a 43-year-old woman from Co Offaly, pleaded guilty at Tullamore Circuit Criminal Court to fraudulently claiming maternity-related payments for two pregnancies that never occurred while working as a teacher at Derrylamogue National School in Rosenallis, Co Laois, between November 2017 and February 2019. She wore a fake bump to school, claimed to be married with two children, and falsified documentation from three doctors, costing the State approximately €60,000. Judge Keenan Johnson sentenced her to five years in prison on 5 June 2026 but suspended the term, backdated it to 1 February 2026, and ordered 12 months of Probation Service supervision. All money has been repaid to the State.

  • Primary school teacher Eimear Carroll appeals four-year sentence for two-year harassment campaign using racial slurs Harassment · Co. Offaly

Primary school teacher Eimear Carroll (42), of Hillside, Seffin, Birr, Offaly, mounted a two-year campaign of harassment against two people, writing letters to Hiqa falsely alleging that a care worker was abusing patients and using racist slurs. The State's case was that she sent approximately 500 letters to the injured party's family, friends and workplace. She pleaded guilty to one count of harassment and two counts of sending by post an article which is obscene, grossly offensive or menacing, and in July 2024 Judge Catherine Staines sentenced her at Clonmel Court to four years with the final two years suspended. She appealed the severity of the sentence, the Court of Appeal heard the appeal in November 2024 and reserved judgment, and on 6 February 2025 it dismissed the appeal, finding no error in the trial judge's six-year headline sentence.
