  Edward Sweeney, 37, a man with an address in Glasgow, is charged with eight offences including possessing 56,025 images and videos of child sexual abuse, producing and distributing child pornography, alleged to have taken place in Dublin between February 2012 and July 2023. He first appeared at Dun Laoghaire District Court in early September 2026 and was remanded for service of the book of evidence. In November 2026, his case was sent to the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for trial before a judge and jury, and he was remanded on continuing bail. The maximum penalty for producing or distributing child pornography at circuit level is 14 years in prison.

  On the evening of 23 September 2018, James Gallagher, a 36-year-old man from Tallaght, Dublin, and another intruder broke into the home of middle-aged couple Edward and Rose Sweeney at Doaghbeg, Fanad, Donegal, attacking Mr Sweeney with a poker and a wheel brace while demanding €15,000. The men were arrested by the PSNI in Strabane hours later and found in possession of the couple's mobile phones, a poker, a wheel brace and a screwdriver. Gallagher was charged with aggravated burglary and pleaded guilty at Letterkenny Circuit Court in 2023. He was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment, backdated to 18 October 2022, with a two-year bond to keep the peace and care of the Probation Services.
