  • Stepson breaks silence in Cork dangerous driving death case Dangerous driving causing death · Co. Cork

On 18 February 2020, Andrzej Obalek, a 55-year-old Polish man, was killed when his car hit a ditch after a collision with Edward McCarthy's car at the Ballybeg Bends near Buttevant, Cork. Gardaí said McCarthy lost control after coming through the bends at excessive speed and crossed to the wrong side of the road. McCarthy pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death and in November 2020 was given a two-year suspended sentence and a seven-year driving ban by Judge Sean O Donnabhain at Cork Circuit Criminal Court. In February 2024, the victim's stepson, Dariusz Jakubowski, said the post should not have been allowed to happen after Galway United apologised for an Instagram photo of McCarthy holding a stop sign.
