Thomas Sheehan, 37, of no fixed abode in Tipperary, pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to one count of orally raping his half-sister Edel Sheehan and five counts of sexually assaulting her in various locations in Clonmel, Co Tipperary, between April 2000 and April 2002, when he was aged 14 to 16 and she was 12 to 14. The offences came to light in March 2020 when Sheehan, who was in prison at the time, wrote two letters to gardaí confessing to the abuse. Mr Justice David Keane sentenced Sheehan to four years in prison on 10 October 2022, reducing a headline six-year term, with concurrent two-year sentences for the remaining offences and a one-year post-release supervision order.
