• Inquest returns suicide verdict for detective at Ballymun Garda Station Suicide · Co. Dublin

  Det Supt Colm Fox, a 56-year-old man from Malahide, Co Dublin, was found dead in his office at Ballymun Garda Station on the evening of 10 February 2018, with notes left for family members and his official firearm. He was the senior investigating officer in the Regency Hotel murder case, in which Patrick Hutch was charged with the killing of David Byrne in February 2016, and the trial at the Special Criminal Court collapsed following Fox's death. An inquest at Dublin District Coroner's Court in November 2024 heard evidence that Fox was under intense pressure over the investigation and believed he had made a major error. The inquest returned a verdict of death by suicide, with a Health and Safety Authority official stating that workplace stress was a factor, and the coroner recommended a new Garda directive on the issuing and use of firearms.
