Stephen Cotter, a 21-year-old apprentice mechanic from Limerick, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm after spitting at and shoving Garda Sergeant Edel Burke during a drugs search at the Strandline in Kilkee on 1 August 2020. The incident was filmed on a mobile phone and widely circulated on TikTok and Snapchat. Sgt Burke, a married mother of three attached to the community policing unit in Kilrush, has been unable to return to work due to continuing pain, tendon damage, and throat injuries. At Kilrush Circuit Court on 28 July 2022, Judge Francis Comerford sentenced Cotter to 30 months' imprisonment with the final 24 months suspended.
