Eddie Fitzmaurice, an 83-year-old man, was assaulted in his home in Bellaghy, Charlestown, Co Mayo, following a burglary between 8.20pm on Friday 1 May 1998 and the following morning. He was tied up, gagged, and left to die for over five days, and his body was found at 6.45pm on Tuesday 5 May 1998. He lived alone and had run his own drapery shop for many years. No suspect has been identified or charged. Gardaí renewed their appeal for information in May 2022, with the investigation ongoing for 24 years.
