Two men cycled to the Harmony Inn direct provision centre on Muckross Road, Killarney, in the early hours of New Year's Day 2024 with a canister of petrol and tried to kick in the front door after reading negative stories about asylum seekers on social media. Eamon Murphy, 25, and Evan Murphy, 22, were both arrested on 6 February 2024 and charged with criminal damage and trespass. Eamon Murphy pleaded guilty and was sentenced at Killarney District Court in December 2024 to four months on each charge, running concurrently, suspended for one year. Evan Murphy also pleaded guilty but in February 2025 had both charges struck out, paid €2,000 to the Killarney Immigrant Support Centre, and avoided a conviction.
