latest first- HSE reviews death of man convicted of assault causing harm, Galway Assault causing harm · Co. Galway
Adam Loughnane, 34, from Merlin Park in Galway, was found dead in the River Corrib in February 2025, hours after presenting to University Hospital Galway's emergency department. A week before his death he had appeared in court on a charge of assault causing harm relating to an altercation with his late father, Dr Bob Loughnane, during the pandemic. He had pleaded guilty and was on bail with a sentencing date in July, but the case, which began in 2021, had been adjourned 11 times over three years. His brother Joe Loughnane claims the drawn-out proceedings contributed to Adam's death and has launched a petition to change how suicidal patients are treated in hospitals. HSE West and North West confirmed the matter is under review.
