On 20 August 2022, cyclist Michael Fleming, aged 63 or 64, was struck from behind by a lorry tractor unit on Millicent Road at Firmount East, Clane, County Kildare, and pronounced dead at the scene. Douglas Ryder, a man aged 27 or 28, was charged with dangerous driving causing death and later admitted careless driving causing death. Ryder appeared at Naas District Court in March 2023, where he was granted bail and the case was adjourned. In April 2024, Naas Circuit Court sentenced Ryder to an 18-month prison term suspended for two years, a four-year driving disqualification, and €5,000 in charity payments.
