latest first- Vet and pound supervisor fined over euthanasia medicine in Dublin Possession and unlawful administration of a vet-only euthanasia medicine · Co. Dublin
A controlled drug called Release (pentobarbital sodium), which must be administered intravenously, was allegedly given orally to a Bichon Frise and a male fawn-coloured Akita at Ashton Dog Pound, Castleknock, Dublin, on 24 July 2020, after which one dog died and the other was humanely euthanised days later. A Garda investigation led to charges against veterinarian Sydney Nagle, pound owner David Stone, and four staff members including Raymond Connolly and Donal Moroney. The six defendants were sent for trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in November 2021. In August 2024, Nagle pleaded guilty to two counts of causing or permitting a lay person to possess the vet-only medicine and four counts of failing to keep records, and was fined €12,500, while Connolly pleaded guilty to two counts and was fined €400.
