Carl Scully, a 34-year-old man, was driving a city council road sweeper that reversed and struck seven-year-old boy Devin Shepherd at St Joseph's Way, Poppintree, Ballymun, Dublin, on 1 September 2019. Scully pleaded guilty to careless driving causing death at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. The judge noted a prior conviction, a six-month suspended sentence imposed in June 2023 for careless driving causing the death of a 61-year-old pedestrian, as a significant aggravating factor. In November 2023, Judge Pauline Codd sentenced Scully to 18 months' imprisonment and disqualified him from driving for ten years.
