  On 20 May 2022 a man was injured in an assault on Patrick Street in Mountmellick, Laois. Desmond Conroy, 58, admitted the assault, and gardaí said he and a co-accused allegedly assaulted the injured man, who suffered a broken ankle. In November 2023 Conroy's solicitor said he would commit to paying compensation and asked for time. In March 2024 €5,000 was brought for the injured man, and the judge remanded the case to Portlaoise District Court on 21 March for clarification of how long a suspended sentence was to remain in place.
