On 6 October 2024 a car knocked a man down at Cowpasture, Monasterevin, Co Kildare, and the driver drove away. The driver, Dermot Hanlon (40), a construction worker, had been disqualified from driving on 6 October 2023 and believed the ban had expired. Gardaí responded to a call about the collision at 2.15am, and Hanlon later phoned in to admit knocking the man down; the victim was taken to Tullamore Hospital with soft tissue damage and no breaks or fractures. Hanlon was charged with hit and run, having no insurance, having no licence and dangerous driving, and he pleaded guilty before Portlaoise District Court. Reported on 28 and 29 September 2025, he was fined a total of €2,000 and given a six-year disqualification on each of the four offences.
