• Derek Wade granted leave to challenge Portuguese warrant affecting open prison transfer Murder · Co. Dublin

Derek Wade, 45, broke into the house of Zhi Song, a student, in June 2005 and stabbed him to death with a chef's carving knife in County Dublin. A jury found Wade guilty of murder in 2007 and he is serving a life sentence. A Portuguese court convicted him in absence of thefts in 2009, and an August 2022 European Arrest Warrant sought his surrender to serve two years and four months. In January 2024 Wade asked to serve that sentence in Ireland, and the Minister for Justice has not decided the request. The High Court has granted Wade leave to bring a judicial review of that failure to decide, and the case has been adjourned to February.
