  On 3 June 2018, Derek Doherty, 52, and his son Nathan Doherty, 24, both of Co Longford, attacked Derek Murphy in a bedroom at Lisnacreeva, Colehill, after discovering Sharon Doherty naked in bed with the victim. The men used a curtain pole, causing serious rectal and other injuries that left Murphy with a stoma bag for 16 months. Nathan Doherty was sentenced in January 2021 to six years with three suspended, and Derek Doherty pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 80 months with 17 suspended in May 2022. The DPP appealed Nathan's sentence as unduly lenient, and the Court of Appeal re-sentenced him in June 2022 to six years with the final year suspended.
