  On 1 September 2024 a man was punched in the face at Market Square, Portlaoise, and fell to the ground, suffering a fractured wrist that required surgery. Derek McNamara (38), of Borris Road, Portlaoise, was charged with assault causing harm and admitted the assault at Portlaoise District Court in November 2025, when the judge ordered a probation report, a community service suitability assessment and restorative justice. At a later sitting, reported on 3 May 2026, Judge Susan Fay convicted him and imposed 80 hours of community service in lieu of four months in prison, despite a request from his solicitor that no conviction be recorded. An appeal against the conviction was lodged shortly afterwards, and the judge fixed recognisance in case of appeal.
