  Derek Donegan, a 39-year-old former corporal in the Irish Army, was sentenced at Dundalk Circuit Court in August 2025 to concurrent sentences totalling four and a half years for assault causing harm and two counts of endangerment. On 25 April 2021 in Bellurgan and Faughart, north Louth, he rear-ended a motorist's car, then drove at the victim striking him below the knees before reversing and ramming the car into a ditch at St. Brigid's Shrine, and was arrested about two hours later. He was returned for trial at Dundalk District Court in August 2022, and in July 2024 pleaded guilty to assault causing harm at an address in Dublin. The final 18 months of his sentence were suspended on a good behaviour bond with 18 months of Probation Service supervision.
