  • Man sentenced to 17 years for firearm possession in Ballymun Possession of firearm with intent to endanger life · Co. Dublin

On 11 March 2019, Derek Devoy, 37, was observed firing a Makarov submachine gun in Ballymun, Dublin 11, after neighbours reported a man terrorising the estate. Gardaí Sergeant Andrew O'Connor, Conor Garland and Niall Minnock responded and were fired upon, with all three officers ending up in the bathtub before Devoy was restrained and a Yugoslavian M75 hand grenade with the pin out was found on the floor. Devoy pleaded guilty in the Special Criminal Court to possessing the submachine gun and grenade with intent to endanger life and to assaulting gardaí, and was sentenced to 17 years imprisonment with the final two suspended. In May 2023, Garda Niall Minnock was awarded a silver Scott Medal for his bravery during the incident.

  • DPP directs no prosecution in Ballymun double murder Murder (two counts) · Co. Dublin

On 16 August 2017, a gunman shot and killed Antoinette Corbally, 47, and Clinton Shannon, 30, in the hallway of a house on Balbutcher Drive, Ballymun, north Dublin, in what was believed to be a botched gangland hit targeting Corbally's brother Derek Devoy. Corbally's pregnant 18-year-old daughter Andrea was grazed by a bullet, and Brian Moran was treated at Mater Hospital for a gunshot wound to the leg. The suspect, a man in his 30s, fled in a series of vehicles tracked north towards Newry, Co Down. The investigation was led by Detective Inspector Jim McDermott, with files submitted to the DPP in 2022. In March 2025, the DPP directed no prosecution in relation to both deaths, a decision the Shannon family is appealing.
