Denis Nolan, 71, a former priest from Rathnew, Co Wicklow, pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to one count of oral rape and 36 counts of sexual assault against a boy aged 11 to 17 on dates between 1994 and 2000 in Dublin and Wicklow. He has been in custody since 2014 and was serving three sentences totalling 19 years for sexual offending against three other complainants when Mr Justice Paul McDermott imposed an additional five-year consecutive term. In December 2024, the Court of Appeal quashed the five-year sentence, finding the trial judge's totality adjustment was somewhat insufficient, and resentenced Nolan to two and a half years, adjusting his overall term to 21 and a half years. The Court of Appeal nominated a headline sentence of 12 years with a one-third discount, then adjusted the term downwards by five and a half years to arrive at the two-and-a-half-year sentence.

Defrocked priest Denis Nolan, 70, from Rathnew, Co Wicklow, pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to three counts of anal rape, one of oral rape and five of sexual assault of a boy between January 2001 and December 2005. Nolan, who was the curate in Rathnew from 1998 to 2012, first invited the boy, then aged 12, to do gardening jobs at the presbytery before grooming and abusing him. He had previously been jailed for seven years in 2014 and six years in 2017 for abusing other boys. The sentencing hearing was adjourned to 2 December 2022.
