Deirdre Kane, a 52-year-old woman and mother of four from Grange Park, Baldoyle, Dublin, died in July 2017. Her husband Terry Kane said the family believed she had become addicted to opiate pain killers prescribed by their GP, Dr Bassam Naser of Sutton, Dublin. An inquest in October 2019 recorded a death by suicide verdict, with Dublin deputy city coroner Dr Crona Gallagher presiding. In December 2021, Mr Justice Mark Heslin in the High Court quashed the verdict, finding the coroner erred in law by refusing to permit cross-examination of the GP and by denying the family's solicitor the opportunity to open Supreme Court case authority.
