Deirdre Buttner, a 67-year-old woman of Newcastle, Co Dublin, is accused of defrauding the State of about €112,000 by claiming deserted wife's and carer's allowances while cohabiting, with offences dated between 2014 and 2021. A Department of Social Protection investigator called at her Newcastle address in July 2019, and she was arrested and said the arrangement was a landlord-tenant relationship. In March 2026 she pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to three counts of deception from 29 counts on the indictment. Sentencing was adjourned for a year and she was remanded on continuing bail.
