In March 2002, Declan Power, a 47-year-old mechanic from Ardmore, Co Waterford, killed his 40-year-old wife Joan Power with a rubber mallet and kitchen knife at their home, then shot 48-year-old publican Maurice Curran three times with a sawn-off shotgun outside his pub in Clashmore, Co Waterford, believing Curran was having an affair with his wife. Power gave himself up to gardaí and pleaded guilty to both murders at the Central Criminal Court in 2003, receiving two concurrent life sentences. He served 19 years in Cork prison before being granted temporary release on strict conditions in April 2021. Power is now in High Court proceedings seeking to overturn a parole condition restricting his travel to within 18km of Clashmore, which he claims bars him from living in his family home.
