latest first- Man sentenced to eight years for firearms offence in Glenties, Donegal Firearms offence (discharge of a firearm) · Co. Donegal
Stephen Dowling, a 25-year-old Irish man from Burren Road, Carlow, fired up to nine shots from a .256 Remington T3X bolt-action rifle at gardaí including Detective Enda Jennings, Detective Darren Carter, Sergeant Eamon Griffin, and Garda Louis Browne, as well as civilians, cars, and three houses in Glenties, Co Donegal over about an hour in the early hours of 22 February 2020 while under the influence of alcohol and cocaine. He had been visiting with an uncle and cousin for a deer-hunting trip and became agitated after drinking and taking half a gram of cocaine. He was overpowered and arrested by armed detectives after crouching behind a pillar and firing two rounds. In January 2022, Dowling pleaded guilty to five counts of criminal damage and six counts of possessing a weapon with intent to endanger life or cause damage to property at Letterkenny Circuit Court. In February 2022, Judge John Aylmer sentenced him to eight years' imprisonment, reduced from a headline 14 years, citing no previous convictions, an early plea, and an apologetic attitude as mitigating factors.
