Dean Carr (25), from Dublin, met a 14-year-old girl at a Dublin city centre hotel on 17 January 2022, after she travelled by train from the west of the country to meet him following Instagram contact. Gardaí identified him from hotel CCTV, and he was arrested in February 2024. Carr pleaded guilty at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to defilement, meeting a child under 17 for the purpose of a sex act, and to sending sexually explicit material to the girl on Instagram. In February 2025, Judge Martin Nolan imposed a two-year sentence, describing the offences as rather serious with premeditation and accepting that Carr was an immature 21-year-old at the time.
