David Stamper, a 68-year-old retired bus driver from Celbridge, Co Kildare, pleaded guilty to 10 counts of forgery, 41 counts of theft and 31 counts of money laundering at the Citybus Employees Credit Union. Between August 2009 and September 2015, he asked staff to sign blank cheques, then filled them out for larger amounts, lodged them to his own account, and pocketed the difference, issuing false cheques totalling €351,642 with a total profit of €107,730. The fraud led to the Credit Union's closure in 2019, and the case was reported to the Gardaí in October 2018. On 16 January 2023, Judge Dara Hayes at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court sentenced Stamper to two and a half years, suspending the final 18 months on conditions.
