  David Smyth, 55, a former civil servant from Inchicore, Dublin, was convicted by a jury of distribution and possession of child pornography after using an online alias to share images of very young children with a US special agent on the Kik app. The distribution offence occurred on 30 January 2016 and the possession offences between November 2015 and May 2016, and the case was discovered following an alert from US authorities before Gardaí linked various aliases to Smyth. On 21 May 2026, Judge Jonathan Dunphy at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court sentenced Smyth to concurrent terms totalling four and a half years, citing the use of an alias and the very young age of the children as aggravating factors. Smyth, who has no previous convictions, continues to deny any part in the offending and will lose his job as a result of the sentence.
