  In May 2020 David O'Gorman, a 37-year-old man, attacked his former girlfriend, a woman in her 30s, in her bedroom at her house in Limerick, punching her repeatedly to the head after an argument about walking the dog. The victim suffered a fractured eye socket and a permanent displacement of one eye. O'Gorman was arrested on 1 June 2020 and pleaded guilty to assault causing harm, and the case was adjourned to November for a full report. Judge Tom O'Donnell later suspended his sentence after O'Gorman agreed to make a payment to the victim, and as of June 2024 he was still a serving member of the Naval Service, with the Chief of Staff preparing a report and an administrative process ongoing.
