On 9 August 2023, a plain clothes Garda patrol directed a car to stop in Mullingar, Co Westmeath, during Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann events, and the car failed to stop before a male occupant fled and was chased and arrested, with a second occupant also arrested. A sawn-off pump action shotgun and five 12-gauge cartridges were seized from a bag discarded during the foot chase. John Nevin, 55, of Columb Drive, and his son David Nevin, 33, of The Cedars, Lakepoint, both men, were charged with unlawful possession of the shotgun and ammunition under the Firearms Act, with John Nevin also facing three counts of dangerous driving and endangerment of life. The case was linked to a feud between two sides of the Nevin family in the Travelling community. Both pleaded guilty and were sentenced in December 2024, with John Nevin receiving two and a half years with the final 18 months suspended and David Nevin ordered to carry out 240 hours of community service in lieu of an 18-month sentence.
