  • Bóthar fraud under investigation as Limerick charity costs reach €1.2m Fraud (misappropriation of funds) · Co. Limerick

David Moloney, of Clino, Newport, County Tipperary, worked with Limerick-based charity Bóthar since 1995 and was its CEO for eight years before resigning in February 2021. Alleged irregularities first came to light in 2019 from an anonymous whistleblower, and Moloney later admitted in a sworn statement that he misappropriated large amounts of donated money for personal use. Moloney claims much of the money was paid to others including former chief executive Peter Ireton, who died in April 2021 following a personal tragedy at his home in Castletroy. Bóthar launched High Court proceedings against Moloney in 2021 and sought to add Ireton's estate as a co-defendant, with the motion deferred to October 2021. The cost of identified alleged fraud and legal bills now totals €1.2 million, and the matter remains under Garda criminal investigation, civil litigation, and a Charity Regulator Authority inquiry.
