David Carroll, a man aged 48, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to three thefts at St Francis Xavier Church on Gardiner Street, one theft at Erin College on North Great George's Street, and one burglary from an apartment in Dublin city centre, all committed between December 2023 and April 2024. The offences, which the court heard were motivated by his drug addiction, included breaking a church window to take donations, ransacking the apartment for items worth €750, and taking €200 in church donations in a night-time break-in. CCTV footage identified Carroll at each of the five incidents. On 6 December 2024, Judge Orla Crowe sentenced him to three years' imprisonment, backdated to April 2024, with the final six months suspended, giving an effective term of two and a half years. None of the stolen items were recovered.
