On Easter Sunday 9 April 2023, a quad bike carrying two teenage males collided with a tree in a wooded area near Ballyshanduff, Ballybrittas, County Laois. David Brown, a 15-year-old from Portlaoise, was taken to Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise where he died, while a second male youth was taken to Midlands Regional Hospital Tullamore with non-life-threatening injuries. Gardaí in Portlaoise are treating the incident as an accident with investigations ongoing. They renewed their appeal for witnesses and camera footage in May 2023.
