In the early hours of 15 June 2016, a 70-year-old man was punched and kicked at the corner of Williamsgate Street and Eglinton Street, Galway city, and a passer-by who intervened was struck in the face at least three times, causing a fractured skull. David Bannerton, an Irish man aged 47, was charged with assault causing harm and assault causing serious harm. In January 2021, Judge Rory McCabe at Galway Circuit Criminal Court sentenced him to six years with 18 months suspended. In July 2022, the Court of Appeal refused the State's appeal to increase his effective sentence, finding the suspended portion justified by his mental health and alcohol history.
