David Ahern, a 37-year-old fireman with Kerry County Council, was convicted of criminal damage by arson after setting fire to State-owned gorse land at Cromane Upper, Killorglin, off the Ring of Kerry road on 13 April 2020. He was one of a crew of nine who attended the scene to put out the blaze, for which he was paid €151.04. A deception charge relating to that payment was dismissed at the December 2021 trial at Cahersiveen District Court. In January 2022, Ahern was sentenced to a suspended seven-month prison term on his own bond of €600.
