  • Sentencing adjourned after guilty plea to assault on Garda in Bundoran Assault · Co. Donegal

Garda Darren Norman was assaulted at the Lidl supermarket in Bundoran, County Donegal, on 23 January 2023, after being called to a report of a drunk man with a bag of alcohol. Liam Ward, 44, of Westend, Bundoran, kicked Norman in the chest, punched him in the face, and put him in a headlock, causing back and facial injuries that forced Norman to take almost three months off duty. Ward was charged with assault causing harm and being intoxicated in a public place, and appeared at Tubbercurry District Court on 25 January 2023, where he was bailed. He also faces a charge of assaulting Norman at Ballyshannon Garda Station on 29 December 2022. Ward pleaded guilty to both assaults at Donegal Circuit Court in December 2023, and sentencing was adjourned pending a victim impact statement from Norman.
