Darren McNally, 38, a man of Portarlington, was charged with intoxication and using or engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour at Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise on 11 November 2021. He had been released from hospital care and was highly intoxicated when he was abusive towards hospital staff and the gardaí. At Portlaoise District Court the judge described the behaviour as outrageous given the pandemic context and noted staff were under severe pressure. McNally expressed remorse and agreed to engage in the Restorative Justice Programme, with a report sought for 24 February.
