latest first- Man jailed 15 months over pig cruelty at Thornton Hall, Dublin Causing unnecessary suffering to animals · Co. Dublin
Security guards at Thornton Hall, a 160-acre former prison site in Kilsallaghan, north Dublin, found two pigs with stab and slash wounds on the evening of 26 June 2024; one had 5cm cuts and was missing a front leg, the other had cuts to the stomach, and both were euthanised after veterinary attention while two unharmed pigs were re-homed. Darren Jackson, 40, a former IT worker from Rivermeade, Co Dublin, was arrested at the scene and charged with two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to animals and one count of stealing keys to a portable lighting generator. He pleaded guilty to the two animal cruelty counts at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court and was sentenced on 4 November 2025 to 15 months' imprisonment, a headline sentence of two years reduced for substantial mitigation.
