Darren Fitzpatrick, 52, a man from Finglas, Dublin, was arrested on 15 January 2011 at Glasanaon Road, Finglas, after gardaí mistakenly suspected him of an armed robbery of a bookies earlier that day. He was put to the ground, handcuffed, and driven to Finglas garda station without being told why, and was released after 40 minutes once CCTV and other evidence ruled him out as a suspect. He claims two of his knuckles were broken when he was put to the ground. He is suing the Minister for Justice, the Garda Commissioner, and the State for false arrest and assault, a case now on trial before Mr Justice Alexander Owens and a jury at the High Court.
