Stephen Duffy, a man aged 28, struck Darren Darley, a man aged 50, with a single unprovoked blow at Belgard Road, Tallaght, Dublin on 29 August 2016, causing a brain bleed, a two-week coma, and life-saving surgery. Duffy pleaded guilty to assault causing serious harm at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in 2021 and was given a wholly suspended four-year sentence by Judge Greally in July 2021. The DPP appealed the sentence as unduly lenient, and the Court of Appeal quashed it in March 2022, imposing four years' imprisonment with the final three years suspended. The Supreme Court dismissed Duffy's appeal against the severity of the sentence on 19 January 2023.
