Darren Brophy of Mountmellick, County Laois, was sentenced at Nenagh District Court for dangerous driving, failing to remain at the scene of an accident, and driving without insurance. At 3.15am on 15 August 2021, Brophy drove away at high speed from a Garda checkpoint at Lisboney, Nenagh, while being processed, and was pursued before abandoning the car on Church Road and fleeing on foot. The court heard the occupants had been at a house party where a fight broke out, and Brophy drove because the vehicle owner, who was in the front passenger seat, was intoxicated. Judge MacGrath imposed fines totalling €550 and a two-year driving ban, and leave to appeal was granted.
