On 18 October 2022, Darragh McLoughlin, a 23-year-old man from Richmond Hill, Cork, assaulted a man in his late teens on Paul Street, Cork City, delivering 250 blows over 20 minutes. The victim was taken to Cork University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries including multiple fractures of the right eye socket and nasal bones. McLoughlin was arrested and later pleaded guilty to assault causing serious harm at Cork Circuit Criminal Court, where Judge Dunphy sentenced him to six and a half years with two and a half years suspended in May 2024. The DPP appealed on grounds of undue leniency, and in April 2025 the Court of Appeal increased the sentence to eight years and two months with two years and two months suspended.
