On the night of 26 September 2026, Gabriel Pereira, a 37-year-old Brazilian national, was driving a rickshaw at North Wall Quay, Dublin 1, when he allegedly made a reckless manoeuvre in a cycle lane and struck a concrete bollard, causing the carriage to overturn. Danielle O'Keane, a 37-year-old mother of two from Saval, Newry, Co Down, was a passenger with three friends on their way to meet her husband after a Westlife concert at the 3Arena, and she suffered catastrophic injuries before dying on 1 October after days in intensive care at Mater Misericordiae University Hospital. Pereira, who had been in Ireland for eight days on a travel visa, was charged with dangerous driving causing death and with endangering the lives of three other women. He appeared before Judge Michèle Finan at Dublin District Court on 4 November, was granted bail with a €20,000 independent surety, and is to appear at Cloverhill District Court on 11 November.
